Carpenter is the baseball coach of third-year Liberty High School in Winchester.
Cholodenko drove home three runs to power the Bison to a 9-0 victory Thursday over Tahquitz in a Mountain Pass League game.
Liberty defeated Tahquitz, 10-8, on Tuesday and the victories give Liberty (11-3 overall, 9-1 in league) the lead in the Mountain Pass standings.
“There was a playoff atmosphere today,” Carpenter said. “Obviously, it was a very good week for us.”
Carpenter started the program at Heritage High School when that institution opened in 2007.
“I like the challenge of starting a program,” Carpenter said. “I live close to Liberty and it looked like a good opportunity.”
The Bison finished third in the league last year. Liberty didn’t beat Tahquitz (11-2-1) last year.
“We lost three close games last year,” said Cholodenko, who is in his junior year.
Cholodenko played for Trinity last summer, and is looking forward to playing more summer baseball.
“I just want to play,” he said.
Cholodenko delivered two runs with a first-inning hit, He doubled a run home in the third inning on a deep hit to center field.
“I’ve been more aggressive at the plate this year,” Cholodenko said.
He was a defensive standout last year, but acknowledged he was a weak link offensively. A lot of work and batting practice generated considerable offensive improvement.
Both of his hits on Thursday came on the first pitch. Cholodenko has ambitious goals for the rest of this season.
“I want to hit over .450 and I don’t want to allow another stolen base,” he said, adding that his batting average currently is slightly over .400.
Liberty was adversely affected when junior pitcher Riley Vogt injured his leg. Sophomore David Kirk has stepped up, throwing five shutout innings. Is Kirk Liberty’s top pitcher?
“He sure pitched like it today,” Carpenter said, adding Vogt is now doing physical therapy.
He doesn’t believe Vogt can pitch this year.
Tahquitz managed to get hits but couldn’t do it in a timely fashion. The Titans managed to load the bases in the sixth inning before relief pitcher Johnny Garcia could retire a batter, but the senior southpaw escaped the sticky situation with two strikeouts and an infield popup.
The teams will play a third game on April 25. That contest could decide which team wins the Mountain Pass League championship.
Tahquitz coach Mike Solar said he doesn’t think Tuesday’s loss affected Thursday’s result.
“If we played tomorrow, I don’t think it would make a difference. Our kids aren’t bothered by that sort of stuff.”
